Nickel Three Cent Piece

With the price of silver rising, it became increasingly more expensive to mint silver coins.  James B. Longarce redesigned the nickel three cent piece using nickel instead of silver, thus giving coins a rebirth of sorts due to all the past failures of the time including the fractional cents.

James B. Longacre redesigned the silver three cent piece with the new nickel three cent piece using a bust of Lady Liberty on the front with United States of America around the outer rim of the coin and the date below her neck line.  On the reverse the Roman number Three was encircled with a wreath.  The nickel three cent weighed 1.9 grams, had a composition of .75 copper and .25 nickel and a diameter of 17.9 millimeters.  All the coins were minted in Philadelphia.
