The Twenty Cent Piece began minting in
1875. This short lived coin was the object of controversy
during the time, due to the fact that it closely resembled the
quarter dollar. This was the reason the coin was only
minted for a year, in 1877- 1878 the coins were only available
as proofs.

During its four year production, the mint produced eight different
combinations were made. Only one type coin was
issued during the twenty cent piece's brief life.
The coin features a seated liberty surrounded by
thirteen stars and the date beneath her on the
obverse. On the reverse of the coin shows the
same eagle featured on the Barber Dollar, with the
United States of America around the top of the
eagle, TWENTY CENTS under the Eagle. The
designer of the coin William Barber. The
twenty cent piece weighed 5 grams, had a composition
of .9 silver and .1 copper, and had a diameter of
22 millimeters. It was minted in San
Francisco, Carson City, and Philadelphia.
